Tour de France: in the midst of suspicion, Matej Mohoric wins his second stage in an adventurer

The investigation of the Marseille prosecutor’s office does not disturb them. Bahrain Victorious won, Friday July 16, his third stage in the Tour de France 2021. After a long breakaway, the Slovenian Matej Mohoric won the 19isstage in Libourne (Gironde). This is his second personal victory in this edition.

The peloton with the yellow jersey, the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE), crossed the line with a delay of more than 20 minutes.

Crossing the line, Matej Mohoric mimicked the gesture of a zipper, supposed to close his mouth to criticism in relation to suspicions of doping targeting his team. A preliminary investigation was opened on July 3 by the Marseille prosecutor’s office in order to ‘determine the reality or not of the offenses that justified its opening’.

On Wednesday evening, the gendarmes of Oclaesp, the central office competent on the subject, carried out searches in the hotel occupied by the Bahrain Victorious team in the vicinity of Pau.

‘I thought about what happened 48 hours ago when I was treated like a criminal,’ Mohoric reacted after the arrival. ‘In my opinion, that’s a pretty good thing. There were checks but nothing was found. ‘

‘But, from another point of view, it was quite disappointing. It’s always complicated to see a policeman come into the room, search, ask questions. But I have nothing to hide, they can search. ‘

Former world champion juniors (2012) and hopes (2013), Matej Mohoric, who is 26 years old, won on the three big national tours. He also became known for having invented an aerodynamic position now prohibited downhill, sitting on the seat tube.

No 35th stage victory for Cavendish

The stage scenario (207 km) prevented Mark Cavendish from winning a fifth sprint and surpassing the record of 34 victories he holds tied with Eddy Merckx. But the Briton, who had received congratulations from the Belgian champion visiting the Tour before the start, assured his green jersey in the points classification a little more.

The race crossed the Landes forest at high speed, in pursuit of a group consisting of breakaways, first six (Bernard, Bonnamour, Clarke, Mohoric, Rutsch, Zimmermann) joined by 14 others 100 kilometers from the arrival.

The gap has long fluctuated under the minute on a peloton led most often by the team of Chris Froome, to the great comfort of the formation of Cavendish who had placed one of his (Ballerini) at the front. Then, the Israel SN formation ended up getting bored on the long straights of the Landes.

The leading group was rocked by a succession of attacks in the last 45 kilometers, before Mohoric provoked the decision by starting at the threshold of the last 25 kilometers.

Saturday, the second time trial is played over the distance of 30.8 km between Libourne and Saint-Émilion, two high places of the Bordeaux vineyard.
