Lifeguard dead, 6 others injured due to lightning strike on Seaside Park, New Jersey beach

SEASIDE PARK, New Jersey — A New Jersey lifeguard has died and 6 others had been injured after being struck by lightning whereas on the beach Monday afternoon.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy confirmed the dying, saying in a press release, “Our hearts are with the family and friends of the young lifeguard killed by today’s horrific lightning strike on the beach in Berkeley Township, and we pray for a full recovery for those injured.”

The Ocean County Sheriff’s Workplace says six others had been injured within the incident, however there was no quick phrase on their situations.

The Berkeley Township Police Division is dealing with the investigation.

“I’ve spoken to Mayor Carmen Amato and offered the full support and assistance of our administration during this difficult time,” Murphy added.

The lifeguard has not been recognized.

That is the second younger New Jersey lifeguard who has died in latest weeks. On August 19, Norman Inferrera, a rookie lifeguard in Cape Might, was rowing a lifeguard boat when a wave knocked him unconscious. He died on the hospital days after the accident.

Cape Might officers are actually re-examining using surfboats following Inferrera’s dying. The Press of Atlantic Metropolis experiences that Cape Might lifeguards will not practice or use the boats for the remainder of the yr amid a re-examination of their function.
